Personal Injury & Compensation

Personal Injury Lawyer in Finland

If you have suffered a personal injury in Finland — in a traffic accident, at work, in a public place, or because of someone else's negligence — you may be entitled to compensation under Finnish tort law. We help English-speaking clients assess their claim, deal with insurance companies, and pursue fair compensation.

Our service

Personal injury compensation in Finland is governed by the Tort Liability Act (vahingonkorvauslaki, 1974/412). Compensation can cover medical costs, lost income, pain and suffering ( kivun ja kärsimyksen korvaus), and permanent incapacity. The right to compensation depends on proving that someone else caused the injury through negligence or a deliberate act, and that there is a causal link between the act and the injury.

Insurance plays a central role in Finnish personal injury cases. Most claims are handled through insurance — the injured party's own insurance, the responsible party's liability insurance, or, for traffic accidents, mandatory motor liability insurance. We deal with the insurance company on your behalf, ensure the claim is properly documented, and negotiate or litigate when the insurer's offer is too low.

When you need a lawyer

Traffic accidents

You have been injured in a car, motorcycle, bicycle or pedestrian accident and need help claiming compensation from the motor liability insurer.

Workplace injuries

You have been injured at work and need help with the workers' compensation insurance claim (työtapaturma) or a claim against a negligent third party.

Slip and fall / public liability

You have been injured in a public place, a business premises, or on someone else's property because of a hazard or negligence.

Assault and violent crime

You have been injured in an assault or act of violence and want to claim compensation from the perpetrator or from the state crime victim compensation fund (rikosvahinkorahausturva).

Medical negligence

You have suffered harm due to possible medical negligence and want to assess whether you have a claim for compensation through the patient insurance system (potilasvakuutus).

Insurance disputes

The insurance company has denied your claim, offered too little, or delayed payment, and you need legal help to challenge their decision.

How it works

  1. 1

    Initial assessment

We review what happened, the nature and extent of your injuries, and the available evidence. We explain your rights under Finnish law in plain English.

  2. 2

    Claim preparation

We gather medical records, witness statements, accident reports and other evidence. We calculate the compensation you are entitled to — medical costs, lost income, pain and suffering.

  3. 3

    Insurance negotiation

We submit the claim to the relevant insurance company and negotiate a fair settlement. Most personal injury claims in Finland are resolved at this stage.

  4. 4

    Court proceedings

If the insurer refuses to pay a fair amount, we prepare and file a lawsuit in the District Court (käräjäoikeus) and represent you throughout the proceedings.

  5. 5

    Enforcement

Once a settlement or court judgment is reached, we ensure the compensation is paid and that any enforcement needed is carried out.

What you need

  • Medical records and reports documenting the injury and treatment
  • Accident report or police report (if applicable)
  • Photographs of the injury and the accident scene
  • Witness contact information and statements
  • Insurance policy details and correspondence with the insurer
  • Proof of lost income (pay slips, employer statements)
  • Receipts for out-of-pocket expenses (travel, medication, care)

How costs are formed

Legal fees are based on the time spent and the complexity of the case. A straightforward insurance negotiation costs less than a contested court case. We provide a written cost estimate before starting any work.

If you have legal expenses insurance (oikeusturvavakuutus) — often included in home insurance — it may cover part of the legal costs. We help you check your coverage and handle the insurance paperwork.

In some personal injury cases, the responsible party's insurer must also cover your legal costs. We pursue this as part of the claim. We do not promise a specific outcome or a fixed price.

Frequently asked questions

What compensation can I claim for a personal injury in Finland?

Under the Tort Liability Act, you can claim compensation for medical costs, lost income, pain and suffering (kivun ja kärsimyksen korvaus), permanent incapacity or disfigurement, and property damage. The amount depends on the severity of the injury, the impact on your life, and the documented costs. We calculate the full amount you are entitled to.

Do I need to prove that someone else was at fault?

In most cases, yes. Finnish tort law requires proof of negligence or a deliberate act by the responsible party, and a causal link between that act and your injury. However, in traffic accidents, the motor liability insurance system provides compensation regardless of fault in many cases. We assess what standard applies to your situation.

How long do I have to file a personal injury claim?

The limitation period for tort claims in Finland is generally three years from the date you became aware of the injury and the person responsible, and no more than ten years from the incident. For insurance claims, you should notify the insurer as soon as possible. We recommend contacting a lawyer promptly to avoid losing your rights.

What if the insurance company offers me a settlement?

Insurance companies sometimes offer a quick settlement that is lower than what you are entitled to. Before accepting any offer, have a lawyer review it. We assess whether the offer covers your full losses — including future medical costs and long-term effects — and negotiate for a fair amount if it does not.

Can I claim compensation if I was partly at fault?

Yes. Under Finnish law, compensation can be reduced if the injured party contributed to the injury through their own negligence, but the claim is not automatically barred. The reduction depends on the degree of fault. We assess how comparative fault affects your claim.

What if the injury happened a long time ago?

The limitation period may still be running, depending on when you discovered the injury and its cause. Some injuries — especially medical negligence — may not become apparent until years later. Contact us even if the injury occurred some time ago, and we will assess whether you can still claim.

Do you handle personal injury cases for tourists and visitors?

Yes. If you were injured while visiting Finland, you can still claim compensation under Finnish law. We handle the entire process remotely and in English — you do not need to return to Finland. We coordinate with your travel insurer and local authorities as needed.
